Most of you are aware of the ongoing Prince George District Teachers Association (PGDTA) strike; many of you are likely impacted by the strike within your own families. This government continues to undermine and underfund public education at all levels from K-12 straight through to the university sector. This job action is necessary to protect public education and we should all be supporting our union Brothers and Sisters on the picket line.
The PGDTA are in a very difficult situation – they have no strike pay to rely on while walking the picket line. Many of us live week to week, pay cheque to pay cheque. For the PGDTA, there is no pay cheque coming this week, nor next week . . . .
At June’s general membership meeting, a motion was put to the floor to support the PGDTA. $500.00 worth of grocery gift cards in $25.00 increments will be purchased and passed to the PGDTA for dispersal to those in need.
It was also suggested that an e-mail be sent out to the membership to inform them of the plight of the PGDTA. If you want to offer assistance or show your support, please feel free to donate whatever you would like: cash, grocery gift cards (the Local is purchasing SuperStore gc’s), or donations of food.
Feel free to contact any member of the Executive for more information or to drop of your donation. All gifts will be dropped off with the PGDTA at the end of the day on Monday, June 30th, 2014.
