August Special General Membership Meeting
August 15 @ 12:00 - 13:00
Good day all,
The Executive have called a special membership meeting to address a few things that need to be addressed in a timely manner. Our current Bylaws state that a special general membership meeting can be called with 24 hours notice but we would like to give as much notice as possible so we have set a date of Tuesday, August 15th,. The meeting will take place in the Senate Chambers. Barring any technical issues, will be available via Elluminate as well. Link to be sent out before the meeting.
As this is a special general membership meeting, only the items listed on the agenda can be discussed during the meeting so there will be no official business done at the meeting other than the three items listed in the agenda.
We have two motions coming to the floor, one financial and one regarding an Memorandum of Understanding to alter the language of the Collective Agreement. The change to the language is necessary to move forward with using electronic deposits versus cheques – so it’s not changing anything within the scope of the work of the bargaining unit.
The third item is ratifying a new shop steward to our ranks. This may not seem pressing but it is as this member wants to participate as a note taker on a grievance underway and as such, needs to be ratified before proceeding.
Please remember two things:
- We need quorum to move motions – in other words, we need members to come out and take part in the meeting;
- Motions are flexible and can be amended or revised. The process is quite simple. The motion is read out to the members in attendance and is moved, in this case by the Executive. The motion needs to be seconded. Once moved, and seconded, the floor is open for discussion on the motion, if applicable. Once discussion ceases, the motion is read again and voted on. That’s it.
I am hoping we won’t take up a lot of the lunch hour but these are important issues facing the Local.
Please put a reminder in your calendar now and we will see you there. (Location to be announced, waiting on booking confirmation)
