National Aboriginal Day – Friday, June 21

Our Local’s Aboriginal Advocacy Committee is once again organizing a CUPE tent at the Fort George Park, this time on National Aboriginal Day – Friday, June 21 and we need your help to make it a success.

Stop by with your family and let them explore while you volunteer for a while, it is an awesome community event!

This will be our Local’s fourth year participating in Aboriginal community celebrations and it is always fun and successful in getting CUPE’s name out there as a community-oriented organization. We provide free fresh fruit, goodies, helium balloons, and removable tattoos for the kids. Kids love the balloons and everyone seems to love the idea of the availability of the fruit as a healthy choice and they also love that it is free!

If you have some free time to help with volunteering at the CUPE tent, please sign up here:

How can you help?

·         Table, banners, and tent set-up 9:30am, take down at end of day at 4pm. Sign up here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgVWnASuLVdxdFB4NUFTU01DTDBwZXQ1QXFVQUNTYVE

·         Attendance at the table to hand out balloons, fruit, brochures, and explain what CUPE is about etc.

·         Blowing up balloons with the helium tank/s, tying ribbon to balloons

·         Donate a new children’s toy or non-perishable food items to be used to support families throughout the many programs offered at Carrier Sekani Family Services (the host agency for this year’s festivities)

You can either email Vaunda at vdumont@cupe3799.ca if you would like to volunteer or simply open the link above and add your name to the list – a half hour to an hour here and there makes the job lighter for everyone. We hope to see some of you there!  Any toys or non-perishable food items you want to donate can be left with Toni Carlton at the UNBC First Nations Centre in room 7-102.

Please remember to fill out a leave form before coming down to help that day!  Indicate on your leave form that it is a Leave for Union Activities and that the Union will be billed for your support at the event.  Your leave form can be taken down to Helen at the CUPE office once your supervisor approves it.

In addition the festivities at the park, the Aboriginal Business Development Centre is sponsoring a Fun Run this year on the morning of June 21!  For more information on the run please head to this link: http://abdc.bc.ca/services/2013-aboriginal-run-walk/
